The side of the last house in the row was already aflame when they arrived, and it spread slowly toward the back of the house. Maxi thought about using a fire extinguisher or a garden hose to put it out, but neither of those things existed in Duskview.

“How are we going to put this out?”

“We can’t,” Aleesia replied and backed away while pulling out her phone, “but I know of someone who can. Why don’t you look around for the cause of this little fire?”

“Little? Seriously?”

Aleesia ignored his remark and headed back to the casino. Maxi didn’t know why she was leaving, but he had enough faith in his assistant to trust her. She was right, though. He needed to find the cause of the fire, and he didn’t see anything nearby that could have started the blaze.

He didn’t have to go far to find the culprit, or culprits, in this case. Three imps stood behind the house. Fireballs formed in their hands, and they launched their attacks toward the back of the home. He didn’t have magic or a weapon, but he’d be damned if he allowed the little monsters to burn down the house he created that same day.

Maxi slid the hammer out of his tool belt and charged at the trio. They cackled and squealed as he approached, and one of them managed to fling a fireball his way. The creature’s aim was off, thankfully, but he felt the heat of the orb when it sailed by his face.

He couldn’t risk chickening out, so he hurried in and swung the hammer at the skull of the nearest imp before his mind figured out what he was doing. The metal slammed into the monster just above the eye. It wasn’t where he was aiming, but it was good enough to make the creature cover its wound instead of attacking. Maxi followed up by kicking it in the chest, then he swung wildly when he felt the heat of the next imp’s attack.

“Master!”

He recognized Sarandia’s voice, but he was too busy batting away teeth and claws to look at the moon elf. He took a slash to the thigh in the process, but what really turned the tide was when one of the imps clamped its teeth down on the handle of the hammer. It wouldn’t let go, and he couldn’t shake it off, so he did the only thing he could think of. He let go, kicked the imp away, and backpedaled.

Sarandia charged through the group with her shield leading the way. She cracked the skull of an imp that was ready to unleash a fireball at Maxi, slashed another with her spear, and then spun the other way to attack the one with Maxi’s hammer in its mouth.

The moon elf had the situation in hand, so he backed away to give her some space to work. The imps didn’t explode with one hit like the others, though, and every blow only stole a small chunk from the health bars hovering over their heads.
